This Oysterdate Precision ref. 6494 is a significant mid-20th century timepiece, produced primarily between 1954 and 1959. It belongs to a lineage of manual-wind Oyster date models that preceded the long-running ref. 6694.
Unlike Rolex’s self-winding Perpetual models, the 6494 is manually wound and not COSC-certified. The “Precision” text on the dial reflects Rolex’s high internal standards of accuracy despite the absence of official chronometer certification.
This particular example features a strong 34 mm Oyster case with a smooth bezel, paired with a rivet-style Oyster bracelet with end links marked “60” and a clasp stamped “1 59,” all in great condition.
The true highlight is the beautiful gilt dial. Originally black, it has aged to a rich milk-chocolate brown tone. It features an applied Rolex logo, elegant hour markers, a “Swiss” only designation at 6 o’clock, and a desirable “roulette” date wheel, where the numbers alternate between red (even dates) and black (odd dates). The dial is complemented by elegant alpha-style hands.
The watch and its hand-wound movement have been fully serviced by our watchmaker.
