Few watches have had a more lasting influence on modern watchmaking than the Rolex Datejust. Introduced in 1945, it was created to celebrate Rolex’s 40th anniversary and became one of the defining models in the brand’s history. More than eight decades later, its basic formula remains remarkably recognizable: an Oyster case, automatic movement, date display and, eventually, the famous Cyclops lens.
At hand, we have a steel and 18k yellow gold specimen, a combination Rolex calls “Rolesor.” The classic 36mm case is in super nice condition, complemented by a strong fluted bezel and, remarkably, the original green caseback sticker still attached.
The champagne-coloured dial features a beautiful soleil finish, with an unusual fine railroad track detail running through the central area and wonderfully elegant Breguet-style numerals. These particular dials have earned the collector nickname “Boiler Gauge”—and we absolutely love them. A quirky and highly distinctive detail that gives this Datejust plenty of character.
The watch is fitted with its original Oyster-style bracelet, reference 78363, with 458 end links and a clasp stamped K7.
Adding to the provenance, the watch comes accompanied by its original punched paper, documenting a sale in Spain in 1984.
The watch and its quickset movement have been fully serviced by our watchmaker and are ready to be enjoyed once again.
A wonderful example of the Datejust formula, combining classic Rolesor construction with an unusual and highly collectible dial configuration.
