The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date traces its roots to the early 1950s, when Rolex began combining its legendary Oyster case and self-winding Perpetual movement with a practical date display. It was essentially a more compact and understated alternative to the Datejust, offering the same useful calendar function in a slightly more restrained package.
The name itself tells much of the story. “Oyster” refers to Rolex’s pioneering water-resistant case, first introduced in 1926, while “Perpetual” refers to the brand’s self-winding movement with its continuously rotating rotor, introduced in 1931. “Date” simply refers to the practical date indication — initially without the now-famous Cyclops magnifying lens.
Unlike the Datejust, which was positioned as one of Rolex’s flagship everyday watches and traditionally featured the distinctive five-piece Jubilee bracelet and Cyclops date magnifier, the Oyster Perpetual Date remained a little more discreet. It was offered with both Oyster and Jubilee bracelets and a wide range of dials, making it an especially versatile part of the Rolex family.
At hand, we have a lovely ref. 1503 in 18k yellow gold, featuring the classic 34 mm case size and a fine fluted bezel.
The star of the show, however, is the seldom-seen vertically brushed champagne dial. It features elegant applied markers, crisp black printing and beautifully aged cream-coloured lume on both the hour plots and hands. It is a wonderful combination of understated elegance and just the right amount of vintage character.
The watch is fitted with a Bulang & Sons leather strap and matching Bulang & Sons pin buckle. It has been fully serviced by our watchmaker and is ready for many more years of wrist time.
A lovely, understated vintage Rolex — elegant enough for a dressier occasion, yet with all the charm and wearability of a proper everyday Oyster.
