Barrington Levy is regarded as one of the most influential voices in the history of reggae. His album Robin Hood, originally from 1980, is a classic that marks the transition from roots reggae to the emerging dancehall. Produced by the legendary Linval Thompson and accompanied by the tight rhythm section of The Roots Radics, this album showcases Levy’s unique vocal style in full glory. Tracks such as the title track, ‘Rock and Come In’, and ‘Love Sister Carol’ immediately became favorites in Jamaican dancehalls. This reissue brings the raw energy and melodic power of the original back to life.
The music on Robin Hood is an essential work within early dancehall and roots reggae. Barrington Levy’s distinctive, almost yodeling vocal style laid the foundation for the sound that would dominate Jamaican music in the 1980s. His influence is comparable to that of contemporaries such as Yellowman and Eek-A-Mouse, who further defined the sound of the genre. 1LP
