In 1977–78, Porsche Design (founded by Ferdinand “Butzi” Porsche) approached IWC with the idea of creating a wristwatch with a built-in compass. Butzi wanted something functional, bold, and distinctly different.
It was a challenging time for Swiss watchmakers — the quartz crisis was sharply reducing demand for mechanical watches. IWC saw this collaboration as an opportunity to innovate and tap into new markets. The first model in the series, Ref. 3510, was launched in the late 1970s. It featured an aluminum case with a PVD or anodized coating, available in black or NATO olive green.
Fast forward to 1991: the newly designed Ref. 3511 was introduced. It featured a titanium case with a ribbed or “coin-edge” finish and a repositioned crown at 4 o’clock. The dial was classic Porsche Design — minimalist and functional — with a thin crosshair layout, yellow tritium lume, white hour and minute hands, and a dark orange seconds hand. On the lower (6 o’clock) side of the case, two discreet push-buttons open the watch face to reveal the integrated compass.
This example comes fitted on its original IWC flat-link titanium bracelet and fits wrists up to 20 cm.
Included in the sale is a certificate of authenticity dated 1993, an IWC service invoice from 2016, and an original IWC booklet. This unique tool watch has been fully checked and regulated by our watchmaker — its Caliber 375.23 is running smoothly.
