Lemania is one of the most historically significant—and often overlooked—manufacturers of Swiss watch movements and chronographs. Founded in 1884, the company built an extraordinary reputation for precision engineering and complex watchmaking, producing legendary calibres that would eventually power watches used by NASA, military organizations and some of the world’s most prestigious watch brands.
The company was established in L’Orient, Switzerland, by Alfred Lugrin, who specialised in chronographs, stopwatches and repeating mechanisms. Lemania went on to become one of the great names in Swiss chronograph manufacturing, developing movements that earned a reputation for robustness, precision and reliability.
In 1932, Lemania joined forces with Omega and Tissot under the newly created SSIH group (Société Suisse pour l’Industrie Horlogère), a structure that would become one of the major forces in Swiss watchmaking.
Lemania chronographs became trusted instruments for military use, particularly for their reliability under demanding conditions. During the Cold War era, British military organisations, including the Royal Air Force and Special Forces, used Lemania chronographs, cementing the brand’s reputation for serious military-grade timekeeping.
And this is exactly the kind of Lemania we love to find: an asymmetrical, single-pusher military chronograph in very good condition.
The case is in fantastic condition, retaining all the little marks and traces of its hard military life. Rather than detracting from the watch, these honest signs of wear tell its story. The case back carries the correct military engravings a wonderful little detail for the collector.
In keeping with British Ministry of Defence specifications, the matte black dial features both the Circle T marking, indicating the use of tritium luminous material, and the distinctive Broad Arrow.
The dial itself is in great condition, with the original tritium still intact. Combined with the beautifully preserved military engravings and untouched character of the case, this is a wonderfully authentic piece of British military and watchmaking history.
