With Slowly We Rot, Obituary delivered an absolute blueprint for the death metal genre in 1989. The debut album by the band from Florida is known for its unmistakably heavy guitar riffs, deep bass lines, and the primal power that speaks from every note. John Tardy’s iconic, tormented vocals give the music a unique and terrifying character. Decades after its original release, this album has lost none of its impact and remains an essential work within extreme metal.
The album is a textbook example of early Florida death metal, characterized by raw production and a focus on heavy, mid-tempo grooves. The sound is a cornerstone of the genre, comparable to other pioneers from the same period.
