The Rolex Air-King has a rich and complex history, originating as a tribute to British RAF pilots during World War II and evolving from an entry-level, understated watch into a bold, modern, aviation-inspired timepiece. It is the only model remaining from the original “Air” series, which also included the Air-Lion, Air-Giant, and Air-Tiger.
The example presented here is an early 1960s Reference 5504 in a lovely 36 mm size. The case remains in strong condition and is fitted with a smooth bezel that retains beautiful definition. The gilt dial remains glossy and is in excellent condition, featuring the Air-King script in a font we particularly love, along with finely printed silver “Super Precision” text. Furthermore, the presence of “Swiss” only at the six o’clock position is correct for this era, complemented by elegant hour markers and fine dauphine hands.
