Introduced in 1945, the Rolex Datejust is one of the true cornerstones of Rolex and the longest-running model in the brand’s current collection. It was the world’s first self-winding, chronometer-certified wristwatch with a date display that changed automatically at midnight—a groundbreaking innovation that would become the standard for generations of watches to follow.
Unlike purpose-built tool watches such as the Submariner, the Datejust was never designed for a specific profession or adventure. Instead, it was conceived as the ultimate everyday companion: equally at home in the boardroom, at dinner, or on a weekend getaway. More than 80 years later, that timeless versatility remains at the heart of the Datejust’s enduring appeal.
At hand is a rarer reference 1600, featuring a classy 36 mm stainless steel case with a smooth bezel and a crisp white so-called “Buckley” dial.
A Buckley dial is not an official Rolex designation but a nickname coined by collectors. It refers to a distinctive style of Datejust and Day-Date dial featuring painted black Roman numerals instead of applied metal hour markers.
The name originates from vintage Rolex dealer John Buckley, who became well known for actively buying and promoting these dials during the 1980s and 1990s. At the time, most collectors favored baton or stick markers, leaving Roman numeral dials relatively overlooked. Buckley appreciated their clean, graphic aesthetic and consistently sought them out, eventually giving rise to the collector’s nickname. Today, Buckley dials are among the most desirable Datejust and Day-Date configurations, appreciated for their understated elegance and unmistakable vintage character.
