The Rolex Datejust was introduced in 1945 to celebrate Rolex’s 40th anniversary and became the world’s first automatic chronometer wristwatch to feature an automatically changing date display on the dial. While many other iconic Rolex models were developed for specific professional purposes — such as the Submariner for diving or the GMT-Master for aviation — the Datejust was conceived as the ultimate everyday wristwatch: elegant, reliable, and versatile enough for any occasion.
In 1977, Rolex introduced the practical “Quickset” function, allowing the date to be adjusted independently through the crown without the need to rotate the hands through repeated 24-hour cycles — a significant improvement in daily usability.
Presented here is the less commonly seen reference 16000. This particular reference is distinguished by its smooth bezel, giving the watch a slightly sportier and more understated appearance compared to the classic fluted versions. As a five-digit reference, it also benefits from the updated quickset movement.
The classic 36 mm Oyster case remains in lovely condition, complemented by a beautifully preserved smooth bezel. One of the true highlights of this watch, however, is its uncommon taupe-coloured dial, which gives the watch a wonderfully warm and subtle character that changes beautifully depending on the light.
The dial further features elegant stick hour markers, crisp white printed text, and softly aged yellow-toned lume plots that enhance the overall warmth and vintage appeal of the watch.
The watch is fitted with a Rolex Oyster bracelet, reference 78360, complete with end links stamped 558 and a clasp code “VD,” perfectly complementing the clean and sporty aesthetic of this charming Datejust.
Furthermore, this fine Datejust is accompanied by its original plastic document holder, a Rolex booklet, and its original papers showing the watch was sold by authorised Rolex retailer Bucherer in 1980.This sportier Datejsut and its quick setting movement have been fully serviced by our watch maker.
One of those Datejusts that simply feels right the moment it reaches the wrist!
