The Rolex Datejust is one of those watches that needs very little introduction. Introduced in 1945, it became one of Rolex’s defining models, combining the Oyster case, self-winding Perpetual movement and practical date display in a design that has remained remarkably timeless.
This particular example is a lovely Datejust with a classic fluted bezel in 18k gold and a folded Jubilee bracelet, Ref. 6252H, with 255 end links. A very nice period combination that gives the watch exactly the right old-school Rolex feel.
The real star of the show, however, is the beautiful blue Sigma-signed pie-pan dial. The blue has a wonderful presence, changing character as it catches the light, while the gold printed text and applied markers give the dial a warm, elegant feel.
For those wondering about the little Sigma symbols, they are the two Greek letters σ that appear on either side of the “ T SWISS T” signature at the bottom of the dial. Sigma dials are generally associated with the use of precious-metal elements on the dial — typically gold hour markers and hands — and were used by some Swiss manufacturers during the 1970s. They have become a lovely little detail for collectors to look out for.
This dial also has an unusual feature we particularly like: the hour markers at 6 and 9 are noticeably fatter than the others, giving the otherwise classic pie-pan layout a little extra character.
The watch is powered by its slow-setting automatic movement, which has been fully serviced by our watchmaker and is ready for many more years of wrist time.
A wonderfully charming vintage Datejust, combining a blue Sigma pie-pan dial, gold details, fluted bezel and an old folded Jubilee. Lots of classic Rolex ingredients, with just enough unusual detail to keep things interesting.Get back to us!
