Rolex Explorer 1016 MK1 Frog Foot Dial with Box and Papers

The Rolex Explorer was introduced in 1953 and remains one of Rolex’s oldest and most iconic sports watches. Defined by its exceptional durability, minimalist black dial, and distinctive 3-6-9 Arabic numerals, it was conceived as the ultimate tool watch for adventure and exploration.

Over the decades, the Explorer evolved only subtly, with each new reference refining rather than reinventing the original formula. Presented here is the definitive classic: the reference 1016. Produced for an impressive 26 years, it is the longest-running reference in Explorer history. It introduced 100 meters of water resistance and housed the reliable Calibre 1560, later succeeded by the Calibre 1570. Today, the 1016 is widely regarded as the quintessential vintage Rolex tool watch.

The example offered here features one of the earliest matte dials, known among collectors as the Mk1 or “Frog Foot” dial. Its nickname comes from the shape of the Rolex coronet, whose wide-spread points resemble the imprint of a frog’s foot.

The 36mm Oyster case remains in excellent condition, retaining crisp proportions and fitted with an equally attractive smooth bezel.

The Frog Foot dial is in fantastic condition, displaying a beautiful soft yellow patina across both the hour markers and hands. Completing the watch is the highly desirable riveted Oyster bracelet, reference 6636, fitted with spring-loaded links, #80 end links, and a clasp stamped “2/69.”

As if the watch itself wasn’t enough, it is accompanied by an exceptional and highly complete set. Included are the original outer box, the rare coffin-style inner box, two hang tags (one bearing the matching serial number), the paper holder, calendar card, translation booklet, polishing cloth, two additional booklets, and, of course, the original guarantee booklet, documenting a Christmas 1970 sale.

Finding a Mk1 “Frog Foot” 1016 is difficult enough. Finding one in this condition, complete with such an outstanding set of accessories, is becoming increasingly rare.
