Every now and then, Rolex did things a little differently, and these German-language dials are a perfect example. Found on a small number of early Rolex chronometers from the 1950s and early 1960s, the usual “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” text was replaced by the wonderfully German “Superlativer Chronometer Amtlich Geprüft” — essentially meaning officially tested or certified.
There are also slightly different German formulations. On some early Datejusts, you’ll find “Superlativer Chronometer Amtlich Geprüft”, while another known ref. 6605 configuration reads “Superlative Chronometer nach amtlicher Prüfung”. The specimen at hand has yet another variation: “Amtlich geprüfter Chronometer”.
Exactly why Rolex produced these unusual dials remains a little mysterious. They are generally associated with the German-speaking market and German-speaking parts of Switzerland, but surviving examples are exceptionally scarce. And that is exactly what makes them so much fun — a tiny, unusual detail that completely changes the personality of an otherwise familiar Rolex.
The ref. 6564 was introduced in 1955 and features a classic 34 mm stainless steel Oyster case with a smooth bezel and the familiar waterproof Oyster construction. But, as you might have guessed, the case is not the reason we decided to bring this one into our inventory.
It is all about that dial!!
A beautiful cream-coloured dial with an applied Rolex coronet, crisp black printing and elegant, seldom-seen spear-point hour markers. At six o’clock sits the Swiss-only designation, while the original cream-coloured lume adds even more charm. And then, of course, there is that wonderfully unusual “Amtlich geprüfter Chronometer” text — the real conversation starter.
The dial is complemented by elegant dauphine hands and a beautiful blued seconds hand, adding just the right amount of colour and old-school charm. We have paired the watch with a Bulang & Sons leather strap and buckle, and it has been fully serviced by our watchmaker.
A 1950s Rolex with a seriously unusual dial, a great little Oyster case and one of those wonderfully obscure details that make vintage Rolex collecting so addictive.
This is not your everyday 1950s Rolex. That German writing makes it something rather special!
Amtlich geprüft. Sammlerfreude garantiert!
