These slightly offbeat “Zephyr” models were introduced in the mid-1950s, beginning with reference 6582, and were marketed—particularly in the United States—as the “world’s handsomest” and highly waterproof watch. The name was primarily used for the American market, giving the model a distinctive position within the broader Rolex Oyster Perpetual family.
The most striking feature of reference 1510 is its hand-engraved, dappled bezel finish, often referred to as the “Morellis” finish. Each bezel was individually executed by hand, meaning no two examples are exactly alike—an unusual and charming detail within the typically restrained Rolex catalogue.
The dial is divided into four quadrants by a fine crosshair motif and notably omits traditional hour markers—quite a departure from the classic layout normally found on Rolex dress watches of the period. This design gives the watch a slightly avant-garde, almost architectural presence on the wrist.
The 34 mm 18k yellow gold case remains in fine condition, as does the beautifully preserved Morellis-finished bezel. The champagne-coloured dial is clean and elegant, free of lume on both dial and hands, maintaining a crisp and refined appearance, interrupted only by the practical date function.
