The Rolex Sea-Dweller was introduced in 1967 as the ultimate tool watch for professional saturation divers. Its development was driven by a very real challenge faced by the commercial deep-sea diving industry.
During the 1960s, commercial divers working on pioneering saturation diving projects—such as France’s COMEX and the U.S. Navy’s SEALAB program—spent days living and working inside pressurised underwater habitats while breathing a helium-rich gas mixture known as Heliox.
Because helium molecules are exceptionally small, they could penetrate the watch’s rubber gaskets and accumulate inside the case. During decompression, the trapped helium expanded faster than it could escape, creating enough internal pressure to force the acrylic crystal from the watch.
To solve this problem, Rolex co-developed and patented the Helium Escape Valve (HEV). Positioned at 9 o’clock on the case, this ingenious one-way valve automatically releases excess helium once the internal pressure reaches a critical level, preventing damage to the crystal and ensuring the watch remains watertight and fully functional.
Offered here is the inaugural Sea-Dweller reference, the legendary ref. 1665, dating to 1979. The watch features a beautifully preserved case paired with a gently faded black bezel insert, giving it the unmistakable character collectors love to see.
The matte black MK3 dial is in excellent condition and displays an attractive warm yellow patina across the lume plots and hands, adding just the right amount of vintage charm while remaining wonderfully balanced.
The watch is fitted with an Oyster bracelet, reference 93150, complete with 585 end links and a clasp stamped “VD,” all presented in excellent condition.
