Introduced in 2003 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Submariner, the Rolex 16610LV was the first Submariner Date to feature a green bezel. What began as a celebratory model has since become one of the most recognisable modern-vintage Rolex references, affectionately known as the “Kermit”.
Â
The special edition is distinguished by its iconic green bezel — referred to as “LV”, short for Lunette Verte — combined with a high-gloss dial featuring larger hour markers and slightly broader hands, a combination now known as the “Maxi dial”.
Â
Although Rolex officially introduced the term “Maxi” with this release, watch enthusiasts had already been using it for years to describe the larger hour markers found on 1970s Submariner models with matte dials.
Â
This early Rolex Submariner 16610LV brings together a number of the characteristics that make the first-generation “Kermit” so fascinating to collectors.
Â
The example offered here is a so-called Mk1 dial version, distinguished by the flat “O” in the Rolex signature and the wide “Swiss Made” designation at 6 o’clock. The dial remains in excellent condition.
Â
The case is in equally impressive condition and is fitted with a particularly attractive flat-four bezel insert in a lighter shade of green. Remaining in beautifully unmolested condition, the insert creates a wonderful combination with the dial and case.
Â
The Oyster bracelet, ref. 93250, is also in excellent condition, featuring solid end links and a clasp stamped CL5.
Â
This example is accompanied by a particularly comprehensive selection of original accessories and documentation: the Rolex inner and outer boxes, a green hangtag bearing the watch’s serial number, a red hangtag, three booklets, an anchor and its original punched warranty paper documenting a 2004 sale.
Â
Further completing the set is a 2024 Rolex Service Card.
Â
A compelling combination of early 16610LV details, honest character and an unusually complete set of original accessories — exactly the kind of subtle nuances that make collecting Submariners so rewarding.
Â
For collectors who know it’s the details that make an early Kermit special!
