The Rolex Submariner Date made its debut in 1969 with the introduction of reference 1680, marking a significant milestone in the model’s history. For the first time, the Submariner featured a date display accompanied by Rolex’s signature Cyclops magnifying lens.
By the late 1970s, Rolex began transitioning from acrylic crystals to more durable sapphire crystals, giving rise to a series of highly collectible “transitional” models. These references bridged the gap between vintage and modern Submariners, combining the character of earlier models with the technical advancements of a new generation.
Early examples, such as the watch offered here, were fitted with matte tritium dials carried over from their acrylic-crystal predecessors. As many of these dials were replaced during routine Rolex service over the years, original matte-dial examples have become increasingly scarce and are now highly sought after by collectors.
This example is presented in excellent condition. The case remains full and well-defined, while the original bezel insert has beautifully faded to a soft light-grey tone. The numerals have blended into the insert, creating the subtle “Ghost” appearance that has become highly prized among vintage Rolex enthusiasts. The original matte tritium dial is equally impressive, displaying rich creamy lume plots that complement the faded bezel perfectly.
The watch is fitted with the correct Oyster bracelet, reference 93150, with 593 end links and an AD2-stamped clasp.
Completing the package is an impressive set of original accessories, including the inner and outer boxes, the punched guarantee paper showing an original German sale in 1984, the original sales invoice—priced at just 2,650 Deutsche Marks—the Rolex Oyster booklet, translation booklet, and subsequent service invoices.
